Go with the kikass guys, as long as seem coachable and willing to work, nothing sucks more than a kick ass designer that does not want to put in work. Oh and pay the kik ass designers well...because when they learned you shorted them they will be pissed

Totally depends...does kickass work mean concept driven or just pretty?
I'd expect the designer with clean work to have some kick-ass work, even if it was fictional.
I wouldn't hire either...need a mix of both kick ass and constrained.

I'd go with the guys that have practical experience. Of course self-directed projects look good, there's no client to mess it up.
