Firewire Partition HELP

I am trying to remove a partition from a extrenal firewire harddrive a recieved from a friend. I have tried all the usual methods of erasing the disk- however disk utility and disk setup only sees the 2 volumes, not a single device.
Any tips?

re-partion the drive so it only has one partion

will take forever but has the same effect as brushing the disc with a steelbrush.
there will be nothing on it anymore.

yeah- thats what i am trying to is repartion it..
thats what i need info on...

mac- use disk utility- either in OS 9 or OS X- and go to erase hard disk, or initialise, something like that. on windows, i dunno.

boot from install disk>
open disk utiliity >
partition disc>
change partition to one
click partition
done

if is an external disk skip line 1 of prev message
this is for OS X but OS 9 is about the same....
