you don't want to make a shadow effect over a photo,
but you can do this by making a black > white gradient and then color settings > multiply...

opacity mask is what you want, i believe.

...just do it in photoshop.

well its quite stupid that the program can't handle gradients to transparency...
I tried the mask thing but i couldnt get it to do what i want.
Stewart: If someone says don't do you can be sure that i will, besides thats not an issue here...

This is really easy man, and it goes like this:
Start with two objects. 1) a pure black rectangle and 2) an identical rectangle using a black to white gradient. The gradient one gets stacked above the solid one. Select both and go to your transparency pallette. From the pallette menu choose "MAKE OPACITY MASK"....
Viola! Black to transparent gradient.
WHY?
In these masks solid black is opaque and solid white is transparent.ENJOY!

be warned: transparency generated by illustrator 9 and 10 is not fully compatible with post script. you'll have a hard time getting it to print properly.

you should try it with a gradient mesh...you can get some very nice organic shadings.

you can do it in Flash as well, this question has been asked a lot, maybe you can find it in DB if no one answered it. :)
