i designed an 8-page event program, 2 flyers, and a 6-page mailer booklet for a client (for an annual event they have), and they're requesting pdfs of the illustrator files that were sent to the printers. "for our records", they say.
i don't want to be an ass and say no, but i feel weird about it. i don't want them taking my work and having someone rip it open in illustrator in the future and add new text, essentially screwing me out of another job or messing with my design at all.
only a verbal contract was involved (because i'm very close to one of them, and i got the job through her), and there was no mention of ownership.
is it within my right to stipulate that these files not be used for any purpose other than "record keeping"?

maybe i'm being paranoid in this case.
what's the standard protocol here? does the studio own the design, or can the client take it and do whatever the fuck they want with it?

I dont know, but you can always protect your pdf, so they cannot modify it, and rip your work...

Send them a printout of the pdf, it's what they'd do to you so it's only fair.

just send a lo=res screen ready pdf... tis a tricky situation really but people will often ask.
