i've been looking for an alternative to my tape adapter, and iRock FM transmitter (which i never use because it's crap!) for ages now. I just learned about this solution today:
my VW jetta's monsoon system didn't make it easy for me to connect my iPod to the stereo directly, but this solution is supposed to be seamless. although, i have to give up the use of my 6 cd changer in the trunk (i believe), but i don't remember the last time i've had cd's in there anyway.
well, i ordered a vw monsoon rca input device ($80) this morning, and it should arrive tuesday or wednesday. i'll let you know how easy it was to install.
i know a bunch of you (including me) were asking about a solution a while back, hopefully this is it.
anyone else used it? any other solutions you like better for vw?
next on my list is a belkin cupholder iPod dock.

Will be interested to hear what happens

Personally. I just specifically bought a Deck with RCA out on th e back and just plugged an RCA to miniplug Y cable on it and fed it through a small hole I drilled in the small removable compartment below my stereo.
I just have my iPod sitting on the passenger seat or in my lap.
I never got around to getting new speakers, however. It sounds kinda bad if I turn it up.

i like the monsoon system in my jetta, so didn't see much reason to get rid of the stock system, especially how seamless it looks with the car's interior.
i did end up buying the belkin tunedok - cupholder, ipod dock (http://www.belkin.com), and even the auto kit (power adapter + audio out jack)
i'll feel like i'm driving a whole new car tomorrow. good thing, because i'm driving down the coast this weekend.

if you have a fm radio, you can get an itrip, and just tune your station to your ipod...
http://www.griffintechnology.com…i just got my car broken into, and they broke the cd player, but i still have my stereo. and with the insurance money, i can get an ipod and and itrip. woohoo!! thank god for dumb theives!

my experience with iRock (fm transmitter) was horrible, so i'm hesitant to try another fm transmitter. i live in san francisco, and there are a ton of radio stations here... same with chicago (where i lived when i bought the irock). plus the sound is only radio quality, while a direct line in keeps as much quality as possible.

6 weeks on the road across the US, and we just used the belkin 4 channel one. I figured i'd run into a shitload of prolems with it, but seriously, it did well the whole damned trip. Only issue was once the batter was at about 1/3 power it would start to hum or squeal a bit, but otherwise, not a single problem for 6 weeks - AND surprisingly the 4 channels was fine.
I would imagine the itrip, with all channels which gets power off the ipod itself would be incredible.

i've had REALLY good luck with the transpod... i've heard mixed reviews, though, and i don't know if it's because my antenna's pretty decent or not...

hope that works... anywho, it gets power from your car battery, so it's more than enough to charge the ipod... i usually run mine with the backlight on all the time at night...
they're coming out with one for the 3G ipods soon too, i hear...

so i got my tunedok, and auto kit from belkin today. very impressed. it was a ton better than i expected. i was getting second thoughts about spending $50 on a power converter from belkin, when i saw similar ones for $25 - but without a pre-amp and line-out on the lighter portion. turns out this is a huge benefit when it comes to sound (or lack thereof when it comes to background hiss).
also, the tunedok holder worked perfectly in my jetta. it looks sweet and positions perfectly. i also found out you can use the remote still, even without connecting the line out to it (because it's connected to the charger, which is connected to the dock at the bottom)

but as for my alternative to my tape adapter - VW-AUX from http://www.pie.net
i got it hooked up as instructed, but no audio coming through. i sent tech support an email. no word yet.
so it's back to the tape adapter for now. at least my auto kit takes care of 95% of the hiss.
