have you tried putting security features on the pdf? would that work? i'm just thinking out loud...
what about distilling the ps files? does that help?

It sure does work.
I've been trying it out for like 15 minutes, and this is how:
In Distiller go to settings -> security
• check "password required to change permissions and password" (don't check password required to open...)
• go to "changes allowed"
• select "none"
• distill the .ps file

I'm pretty sure you can still open those, I'll check it out though, as handy as pdf may be I still have many reasons to hate them ;)

if you distill it the way I said above, you cannot open it in illy - but you can view/print in acrobat.
you could also change the settings so they aren't allowed to print if you want.
I tried it me self.

Only works in Acrobat 5.0 and later btw. Funny thing was that in 4.0 you would also be able to apply a password, but anybody could just turn it off again after opening the file in Acrobat - stupid ...
