does it help? does it work? I've been reporting spammers all day in frustration. Is it all in vain?

yes.
Just block them.

blocking doesn't work very well anymore. It worked for awhile. Not to mention that some valid emails get blocked.

I think all you can do is optimize your blocking... Our account catches spam on the IMAP server before downloading, and I just check the Spam folder thru the webmail client every week or so to see if it caught any valid email (usually 1 or 2).

it does still let a lot thru, but a few extra filters at the mail client level would catch most of that if I could be bothered setting them up...

even if you block it doesnt matter because you can get spam from the same sender but it routes different ways.
the only way you can deal with spam at the moment is to switch to a know sender acceptance, so you can only recieve emails from people in address book. (not very practical)

We do still get some bad ones like the recent faked sender (mail bouncing back to us saying we had sent it). But if you use a highly managed service such as everyone.net, they eventually add those to their block lists, and they also do Virus scans (forwarding the mail, but with virus removed, so you get to check) , so it's about as clean as you are going to get...

spamcop sure as hell makes you feel better though

You can use a SBL list from Spanhaus.org.
Or you can LART the ISP from which the email came from directly. Some ISPs dont give a flying fark, but others do.
This forum has some good info as a resource. I am an active member there as well.

Some of those systems dont work very well. We often had to notify our hosting service to get us de-listed after somebody had a whole sub-net (including our server) on our ISP blacklisted, because of someone else on the sub-net sending spam or having an insecure setup.

That is exactly why they work. If your provider sticks you in the ghetto with the spammers ... then make them get you in another netblock. It is the pressure on the ISP and the upstreams that make the blacklists so effective.
If your ISP is hosting spammers then you shouldnt be supporting them in the first place.

crypt your mail adress in your web page :

Just seems like a blunt instrument.. it was never clear who/why was causing problems for us, or whether it was people unknowingly becoming a relay or what... We certainly don't want to change hosts unless someone can suggest a better deal than 700GB /mth transfer for $105.
