I want to mickey mouse my telephone into my computer, I just need to record what your ear would normally hear, nothing fancy, any ideas on this?

put a microphone close to it?

I need a more consistent and dependable method, and the mic thing doesnt work well unless you have a really good mic.

Thank you for that link, but I should have mentioned it needs to be free or cheap.

I'd imagine that porn lines get really boring if its the same phonecall over and over again.

why don't you plug a phone line into your computer. use a dialing program and record the sound?
- DigitalMe0
other ideas:
speakerphone/microphone
or
get a male to male mini plug cord and run it from the headphone jack on the phone, into the microphone 'in' on your sound card.

dunno about on macs but on my pc I can enable the dialing sound of my modem to come out through the speakers - just put in whatever numbers you want dialed and sample sample back through some normalo recording app. too izzy.
is that what you're after... i'm starting to think i was wrong... hmm oh well - life's hard like that sometimes.

Is there a dialing program for OSX? I couldn't find it.
I tried wiring an old phone ear piece to a 1/8 jack wire, but it didn't work, there were 3 wires to it, I detached one, and could still hear from the speaker, so I used the remaining 2, but I got no sound...

this is mad lo-tek, but you can splice a phone cord with a mono audio cable ... in this case, with a mini-jack cord, that way the computer will hear everything you would hear with a receiver. if you get really tricky, you can also splice a receiver back in the chain so you can talk on the phone normally whlie the computer records.
i did something liek this when i worked for a collage radio station, and we didn't have a proper set up to record phone interviews.
once you have the sound in your computer yhou can use just about any software to reord it.
