any experience or ideas around on how to make lots of money with a free mag?
the mag exists yet, works with advertisement, but doesnt make profit.
so im looking for good ideas on how to improve profit.
any tips on marketing, convincing sponsors and good ideas on side-projects that would increase profit are welcome!

Hold a monthly party.
Check out club/bar/live music listings in your area...see what companies are involved (in sponsorship) and get in contact with them.Or...
Start a hosting service for porn sites and filter the cash through to the magazine...

yeah, monthly party is a good idea...and the porno hosting sounds even better...i could find the 'actors' at the partys:-)
...the party idea is a good one!
thanks bluejam.

your circulation size and reader target group data.
parties are over done. they do not bring in effective publicity unless you got a good publist or you know people in media to get the word out.
i been to way too many magazine parties, all the same.

wait.. am i confused?

well - the magazines themselves are all the same as well, right? Create a magazine thats truely different and succeed (or go bankrupt)

circulation size (if i understand what you mean): 20'000 exemplars per month in three different cities, makes 60'000.
target audience: people that go out (16 to 30/40).

jkob: lots of great truely different mags are bankrupt:-)

Lower the costs w/o lowering the ad rates, with a circulation like that you should be able to get quotes from printers all over the continent. Use interns instead of paid employees - that was the mags around here do.

more and more and more advertising - you will need a bigger print run to convince advertisers to advertise. So work on getting more distributors. Or think about doing a mail campaign or small "coupon" type thing giving people "free magazine subscription - fill this in and receive 6 months free".
I've seen some online companies do campaigns where if you register for their site you get a free mag subscription. Look into commercial sites that you can do partner promotions - exchange them advertising in your mag for advertising on their website for subscriptions.

i'm confused what you're in it for. profit or to share ideas/art?
with a circulation like that you should be able to charge up the wazoo. fucking magazines in US do it all the time. even the crappy ones.
i always give lower rates to indies and friends, the majors set aside budgets for that shit a year in advance with RFPs.

thank you mick and halfnoise, looks really as it is a matter of more and more advertising...and getting more distributors.
thanks also for the propositions on the 'coupons', this is a good idea!
and I like the the idea of different add rates for indies and really commercials.
:-)thank you.
