I've heard of this terminal thing quite a bit. I have a powerbook and have seen the terminal and even opened it.
I'm guessing it's a coding tool...
Can someone tell me what it's used for and what's so good about it... is it a linux thing....
I want to learn more about it...

do you have more control over your MAC if you know how to use the terminal?

actually... the terminal is a unix thing. like the dos thing in winblows.
can do a lot of shit with it. also you can fuck things up good if you dont know what you are doing :)

yeah i was afraid of that

I only use it for anything that nobody builds a proper GUI application for... such as using SSH into our unmanaged Linux server to do stuff as root. And I barely know what I'm doing, so it's scary.
A lot of what you need to do in there is done more efficiently and easier by various GUI utility applications.... i.e. there are some very good OSX apps for batch processing files from a catalog program, or changing permissions for whole groups of files, or doing complex FTP stuff, so you really shouldnt have to use the Terminal very often if you dont want to..

The terminal is great for lots of things, especially if you've worked in a UNIX environment before. Let's say you've got one app open that's hanging, even after a force quit, you can load up terminal and kill the application's process that is causing the hold up. It is also great for TelNet type purposes as the others mentioned. Here's a great site for basic Terminal commands:

Just never use the 'rm' function okay, promise you'll never use it.
