I've seen these done before in websites. Anybody have a resource for this?

Tables always show what's behind them, unless you specify a background color or image in the table or tag.
That is, they're transparent by default

In a fixed design layout, you could fake it with a *translucent* background image that aligns with the opaque image around it.
Or use PNGs, but those aren't supported by IE yet

no, i'm not talking about photoshop filters, i'm talking about css. however, i believe this feature is only supported in ie. never used it, so i can't say for sure.
