FUCK
some sort of application (spyware, adware?) is running on my computer. symptoms:
1. getting virtual memory warnings, slow performance (it's a fast machine)
2. when ever I try and type in a search engine in IE (google) some other jacked page comes up .Running XP. HEP! downloaded Ad aware and ran it, got rid of some stuff, but the main problem is still there. ANyone else been through this?
thanks. grrrrr.

First, unhook the network cable.
Do a full system scan with your virus app, if it quarantaines (sp?) any files, delete them immediately. Second, run ad-aware again, delete everything it finds. Restart the machine, do the same procedure again.
Then, open the browser you don't normally use. Like, if using Netscape for testing only - use that and download this
http://securityresponse.symantec…Run the program. Restart again, and full system scan, delete the files it find, if any.
Then you should be fine.
If not, open up Ms Word and ask the paperclip. :)

And the most important of them all: don't frikken open .Pif's or any other weird attached files, even from friends.

C:>WINDOWS>SYSTEM32>DRIVERS>ect
when you get there delete the host file. and if there is a back up host file delete that too.
you shit should work fine after that.

hmm. I'm geting a similar problem.
I don't get redirected to any page, but any search on google or yahoo gets me a page not found.
Is 'Imhosts' a backup host file?

Also try running Spybot and Ad-ware. I find sometimes Spybot finds files that Ad-ware doesn't and vice a versa.

im just wondering if the delete host file solution workded for anybody with this problem.
ive deleted the host file, and tried the jox solution, but im still not able to access google on IE. i still have 4 files in my system32/drivers/ect folder, but none have anything to do with host other than the Imhosts file.
any suggestions?
thanks

You may also want to take a look through your registry, if you're using a PC.
I had some Xupiter spyware on my machine once. After doing all the cleaning and then rebooting, the stuff came back. I couldn't get rid of it until I removed every reference from the registry.

thanks....workin on it now.
