Encapsulated Postscript is a file format that includes all of the postscript data that gets sent to the output device as well as a low rez image (jpg, pict or tiff) that page layout programs can use as a placeholder. Most graphics programs such as Illustrator and Photoshop can generate eps files. The EPS file format has been around about as long as desktop publishing. Nowadays, there are additional file formats that can be exchanged between programs. Adobe allows photoshop files to be imported directly into Illustrator or InDesign. This is an advantage over eps in that it allows for the layered file to be further edited after its placed.
