quick question...i'm thinking of making my own canvases to paint on...i'm not an artist..but i thought it might be a nice touch for the new place...

so...that been said...is it going to be really expensive?? like buying the wood and the canvas itself and the primer stuff???

anybody with experience in this area?? any advice would be good!!

    thanx in advance!!

it ends up being cheaper in the long run if you stretch your own canvas/linen.

to stretch your own canvas you need stretcher bars, a roll of canvas, gesso, staple gun + good staples, sand paper & canvas stretchers.

for linen, all of thee above plus rabbit skin glue. becarefull with the rabbit skin glue.. it will stink up your place because you have to cook it.

it is very labor intensive doing it yourself from the stretching & gessoing. you will have to gesso the canvas/linen about 3 or 4 times with sanding in between to get a smooth surface.

all this being said, all of this is worth while if your going to do quite a few paintings. if your going to do 1 or 2, it is a lot cheaper buying pre-stretched canvas/linen from your local art store.

also if its your 1st time stretching, i suggest getting a book on how to do it. without proper instructions on how to stretch you might fuck it up. the canvas has to be tight as a drum.

all that being said.. there is nothing like the process of doing all of that yourself.. the satisfaction

those pre-stretched things you buy from a store are pieces of shit. they are not gessoed well nor the wood stretcher bars are great. they are very thin

i prefer to stretch my own.. i like the process

thanx ikbenvanrijn!! that's what i was thinking...just wanted the satisfaction of knowing i did it all...beginning to end...that and i want some odd dimensions....

is there a difference in quality from linen and cotton....

    i found this... http://www.ceramicgoddess.com/ca…

    about right???

basically yeah.. but i never made my own stretchers.. i just bought them.

and to your other question, yeah there is a difference between canvas & linen. its texture. canvas is more smooth/flat. linen tends to grab the paint better. as for preference, i prefer the linen
