"Acrobat PDF File Format is having difficulties"
That's what I'm getting when I try to open the .ai document.
Anyone had this problem before? I really need this file.

Yes - the problem comes up when you save the file and check the "make PDF compatible" box...
Try opening it from inside Illustrator then re-save without this option.
You may have to restart Illustrator as well... 10 is buggy.
