Maybe a silly question, but what's the easiest way to digitize video from a VCR? I've got a G4 powerbook.
Thanks in advance.

get a VCR, line it into your machine, get some video conversion software from http://www.downloads.com and transfer it to some DV format and then burn the CD or DVD. :)

Thanks JazX...
But how do I line in to the machine. I've only got S-Video output. Do I have to have something to come in the USB or Firewire slots?

If you have a DV camcorder or something that might work as a bridge between your comp and VCR, it works quite easily.
Also, you need some type of capturing software, i.e. iMovie, Premeire, Final Cut...
Simply connect the dv cam via rca output to the vcr and the dv cam to comp. via firewire or usb and capture all you want.

ok that was the next thing I was going to post, you might need adapters of some sort to do it. Data Capture, get something with a couple of port options, something from Pinnacle. USB Port and RCA compatible.

If you have a DV cam then connect that to your VCR. So like this VCR-DVcam-software-Harddrive. Finalcut Express is a good one but there are many more you can use. That's my system and as you can tell http://www.punkrockvideos.com I have a lot that I need to digitize to my harddrive.

usb and video dont mix.
you need a capture device thats firewire enabled, or like someone else mentioned a miniDV cam would do just as good.
being as how you arent much of a video buff, i suggest going with an easy to use/throubleshoot app.
on the apple side we have iMovie, i dont know the PC equivalent to that.
but stay away from USB if you want full screen vid caps, if you want to make tiny web movies then use a USB device, this is a good one http://www.xlr8.com/ProductInfo/…

If you don't have a DV cam then you will need a capture card firewire and that might run you the same cost as a lowend DV cam. Sony makes a digital8 models that are cheap.

Thanks for the info - this helps a lot. I've heard the Sony's are very reasonable.
I'm on the Mac side so Imovie should work fine for what I'm doing to start out with. I just need to end up in quicktime.
