Hey- I have access to an art gallery for one night, Oct. 4 in LA on Melrose.
I'd like to do a bunch of collaborations to be hung up for the night. If you're around LA (it's easier to pass around artwork) and want to terrorize some work I've done, just e-mail me soon...deadlines fast approaching.
Here's the details:

OK -
So here's the scoop, I was walking to WAX records and noticed that a cool little gallery was closing its doors. The guy said he had the space until October but it would be easy to set up a one night gig. He offered to paint the walls and even bartend if I got wine. So...time crunch for a fun night, usually how it happens.
I'd like to tie the pieces with a common theme of collaboration, specifically, I have a series of pantone marker/pencil/watercolor pencil sketches on Aquarelle archival paper- They are similar in theme, I'd love to see other people's idea of modifying them with their personal attitude.
The paper is amazing and can take abuse -Maybe I can give each of you two pieces, one with a drawing/market the other with just a field color - I've already made both just need to get it to you.
In any event, this is just a fun way to get people together for an art event in LA...I don't do nearly enough of that here.
thoughts?

huh? im so lost. im sorry.
whats the theme?
i was thinking about and at the last minute exluded myself from the show brandy flower did recently.. "up our sleeve*.. all work done on record sleaves. it turned out really nice. kicking myself now for never turning in my sleave.. the show went to SF, Japan and NY.
*sigh*

THEME:
My take: Reinterpretting an existing series of drawings-how far can you push a piece from an already existing series and still have it be relevant to the multiples?
- pepe0
sounds like an exercise more than a theme but thats cool....maybe kierces pieces are the base and each of our own personalities on top of his work act as the excentuation....
im down. sounds fun.

It may be an exercise, I did fine art in college and need to find ways to play with real materials and step away from the LCD - just want to share that opp. with other creative types.
Here's the letter I'll include with the artwork:
MY TAKE: reworking an existing art series
Thanks for taking some time and making your mark on some of my artwork. I’ve completed a series of exercises using Pantone markers/pencil/watercolor pencils on color fields, using multiples of banal imagery. It didn’t feel quite finished so I had the idea of asking other artists and designers to reinterpret it however they want to. I’d like to see how far each piece can deviate from the original series, yet maintain a cohesive sense when viewed together.
The idea is authorship and re-authorship. In the most basic visual display, can you manipulate a rectangle that someone else has already drawn on and create something that is uniquely you, yet references and adheres to the original whole.
Please return the artwork no later than: Oct. 1, 2003
Please join and invite your friends to the one night only party/gallery of the pieces:OTOKO gallery

I think what everybody is hinting at is... why don't you just curate a gallery and review personal submissions. it doesn't sound all that fun to take someone else's work and re-work it... and even worse the timeframe is so short.

I think I might take you up on it (I emailed you, real name is joe)
I think it might be a cool idea to collaborate in somehting of that nature.
I'll email again or give you a call if I think I'll have time!

I think, lilbabyleg, if I just curated a show and reviewed personal submissions it would be something else entirely. It would just be another gallery.
I love the tagger/sticker/graf/ worlds as well as mash-up/white label mixes in music- the thought is how fast and furious can you deface something and make it your own? I think if you can throw up a piece in 10 minutes on a freeway sign, you can certainly pull out your box of crayons and do something fun with something someone gives you. A ticking clock helps move things along -
