please post any materials you have used or would like to use in a handcrafted piece of design.
i do not nescessarily mean furniture, rather books, boxes, portfolio's, flyers, posters, booklets, cases etc. etc.
anything one can make by hand and a few tools.. related to graphic design.
inspire us.

wood is a nice material to handcraft...
...nice portfolio cases out of wood in a special design could be a runner, looking at all the 'looking for a portfolio case' threads in NT.

that's a start.
i am making a case to hold plates with images/photographs on them, i was thinking of wood or woodchip.. also metal or plastics could be an option.
keep them coming.
(and no, do NOT give me an image of a stone after someone posted the scissors...)

I made my first portfolio case out of card board boxes. It worked well and was quite different. That was about 10 years ago.

im not sure what your making so its difficult to establish a suitable material. Ill hazard afew guesses.
how about some heat-sealed polymethylmethacrylate (such as perspex). No binders or bolts.
slick or sickIndustrial grade felt is a easy material to work with. its also durable and there is an abundance of it as run-off from waste streams in furniture making or car noise insulation etc. hip and sustainable.
you could look at combination materials - bamboo/rattan and reclaimed materials from clothes etc. etc.
cappa board.
hemp.

4cV, ha!
That tone of voice makes me think of a creative director i worked with in the past.
He'd go off to me and copywriter Joeri:' when i come back i want three marvelous ideas and two other ideas i can actually work with and he was not being ironic.'We would lean back and our minds would wonder of to this other thread called 'HAPPY PLACE'

- different grades of veneer
- broken plexi or lexan
- nickel plated magnets
- luckily my brother works for a packing company, you can find all sorts of odd shaped pieces of wood, foam, metal..whatever keeps things secure. it's almost like pieces of molds.
- i lived near a hydrolic/welding company. sometimes they would pour steel into molds for fittings, the slag that came off was instant sculpture.
hope that sort of helps.

oh and i don't know how it's done but it's the coolest damn thing i've seen in awhile, in the new issue of Wallpaper, there's an artist that does blown mirror glass. it looks like mercury forms coated with 3" of glass, very tight looking.
find a glass or blacksmith, hang out with them for awhile, their waste always has potential.
i'm actually trying to start a piece that's just a simple block of wood, dremel and sand the piss out of it to get a mobiac shape then soak it in silver paint over night, then dip it in the stuff that's used to make screwdriver handles. almost a suedo effect of the mirror blown glass, but adding a wood texture to it.
sorry, tangent, creative bug has been slapping the shit out of me buy i have no money, room, or tools to create. damn.

hey, thanks a lot, lowimpakt & auricom!
that's inspiring and worth finding out more about.
has anyone got any links as to stick perspex side to side and that sort of thing?

*sigh*

why the sigh?
you could look for transparent adhesives or some nice architectural fastners or bolts. the options depend on the use though.
