ugly design vs clean design

so a client just told me that since they have rather ugly direct marketing pieces, we need to try and match it up with the new website i just created... in other words, lets throw big "splat" bursts everywhere...
why doesn't anyone realize that maybe we need to work on making the direct marketing pieces a little nicer... to fit with the site i just designed?
...no lie, they actually used the word ugly :(

tell them that a clean design will juxtapose the busy.. err 'ugly' nature of their DM.. well, it will wont it, seems obvious.
