Ideally, it's better to have a server that is built for streaming with it's own channels to be honest, but if you do it why not just make an .mp3 or whatever and let the user choose. Unless you have to put it in some certain format?

realmedia encoder is available for free but it is hard as fuck to find on their website.
I mostly bring mp3s into Flash now though, since a lot of people seem to hate real player and SMIL never really went anywhere.

I don't think you are really streaming it though using Flash, you are more like embedding it into the file, no?

Although I guess you could do it with XML, yeah..

I'll need it to keep the user from downloading the complete file..
just listen / no download..
i think real will do fine.

stream with it with flash. latest version (6.079) can actually read MP#'s ID3 tags for info on the author, song name, album , year, etc...
here's some tutorials on this subject...

there are two ways that i stream stuff...
the first way is with the quicktime streaming server that i have running at equinex:-)
true streaming (meaning it's scrubbable throughout the timeline and you don't have to wait for that part to download)the other way is not true streaming, but it's in flash. Check out my sisters site and go to the discography section and you'll see what i mean.

it's embedded in flash and is not scrubbable but does the job quite nicely.btw, i haven't had real on my system and will bypass ANYTHING that is encoded in real before i actually download that POS software. Bypass. Gone. Never listen. Buh bye.
