Sometimes in domain names on bigger sites, the www becomes www2 - is this a database thing ? anyone know ?

I think it is a load balancing thing.

it could also just be a subdomain...it's not a database thing...the loadbalancing is possible.

but i still dont get it - is it a second domain or the same one with another site attached to it?

Load balancing distributes traffic efficiently among network servers so that no individual server is overburdened.
Meaning - larger sites with lots of traffic will create mirrors of their site on a few other servers and then redirect the traffic to the least busy server so no one server has to handle all of the traffic.
Where I work we have 4 - www, www2, www3, www4
Think of it like sub-domains that are hosted on different servers. And, all of the sub-domain content is just a copy of the original.
Hope that makes some sense..
