Ebon has it right, $200 for a startup company that needs a boost, $2000+ for a whole brand and I dentity, plus a maintenence contract so they dont screw it up in the future and mess up your concept

you guys are lowballing it!!!
A logo is the cornerstone of a companies identity to the world.
FedEx paid One Million dollars for their logo.
A good logo takes a couple months of good research, sketches, comps, etc.
I would say the bottom of the barrel price is $2,500. Also that doesn't include the rights to do wahtever they want with it. Those rights cost more.
For a typical small business, anywhere from $2,500 to $10,000 is appropriate.
And yes, vector is the way to go.

i would agree with you, db... the problem is that not all of our clients have the brains to tell the difference from a good or a bad job. a good price ( for a freelancer ) here is about
1000 €. I've heard of logos made for 40€ ..... the horror...

I meant $200-$2000 for handing them a disk and sending them on their way.
If you are talking about branding strategies and style guides triple that last number.
