What do TV stations or networks use to update information on screen dynamically?
for instance: A baseball game screen is loaded with updating stats - scores - the current play - who's on base... all things that get updated by the minute.
I have to set something up for a client that will only take up the bottom portion of the screen during the news -- but the info will be diff. each day.

There are bunch of different propriatory systems used at the stations. They are generally pretty expensive, but getting cheaper all the time. You might want to check out http://www.ibc,org and look at the product locator for different categories like "information channel".
Note: Increasingly the scrollers etc. are becoming interactive.
