Lightwave 3D.
although if you want something that simple, strata 3d works.

get "virtual pc" for mac and then install whatever you want.

cinema 4d is easy.. and has a lite/basic version that is extremely affordable and upgradeable to the heavy pro shit later on.
C4D is the way to go...
easier then Lightwave for a newbie imho..

3D MAX is easy. At least the basics (primitives, textures, animation, timeline, etc...)
Oh, but it's for PC... ;-p

Don't laugh at the Virtual PC idea!
We used to run Rhino http://www.rhino3d.com to do automotive design (NURBS modeling) in Virtual PC on a G3 500mhz laptop, and it was quick enough!
The Rhino demo only allowed you to launch the app 25 times.... The trick is with Virtual PC you don't ever have to quit Rhino, you just leave it running, save the Virtual PC state, and shutdown your computer... and return to where you left off later. So apart from crashes you can go a year or so with the demo.

actually... sorry to laugh it may actually work, but i've never considered it before.
I've heard lightwave is a little criptic/tricky.
Sounds like Cinema 4D is kewl.
And the sketchUp app looks decent... hehe sounds like ketchup

if you just want to do basic stuff get the 3D pop art plug-in for illustrator. it's like 60 bucks.
hope that helps.

sorry ribit... but even running IE (for testing) on VPC on a G4 was a hell... but good for you... never tried it eversince...

SketchUp is really intuitive...it has a sketchy default render style that looks like marker strokes, and you get real time shadows cast by the buildings as you create them (the shadows are correct for the date/time/location)...lots of great interface ideas.

amorphium is along the lines of bryce, ent. purposes only.

It seemed like Rhino ran better than anything else on VPC... rotating the model was snappy... but yep browsers and other stuff was slow...

Blender is a free 3d modelling and animation suite available on many different platforms and released under the GPL.
