say you were planning on taking a trip to europe for 6 months, using a very meager bank account... what do you estimate it would cost? Living at hostels, eating cheapely, and generally no luxuries wouldn't bother me a bit.
Who here has done this?

I don't have an answer but i'd like to know too.

Depends where in Europe. London, Paris, Rome, etc are expensive cities ... but the backwaters are cheap. Just came back from 2 weeks in central Italy ... amazing.

Dolan, what was the cost in Italy? I'd love to go there for 2 weeks.

Well, hard to calculate my costs because I was travelling with 4-6 other people and we rented a house. We were in and around Florence, Sienna and Tuscany --- really great. Florence is the best art city in the world and Tuscany is dotted with amazing medieval towns like Montalpuciano, Pienza, etc. I'm sure there is a way to do it on the cheap --- there were tons of students about.

Try to work for a couple of weeks at every location. You see different things and meet different ppl. Plus you get some money to at least pay for your stay, I met a lot of aussies here in Amsterdam and in London as well, who did this. But you better go in the summer if you want to have better job-opportunities.
You can buy a trainticket with which you can travel through every country in Europe for a period of time. This is a very cheap option if you want to see a lot.
Go to eastern Europe, it is cheaper and friendlier.
Stay for a short period in the big cities. They will probably cost you to much money and there are much better things to see.
Go to the countryside of france, italie, spain or portugal. You probably can find some work there and the ppl are very friendly.
Try to go to Ibiza if you like to party and you are not affraid of a lot of cockneys.
Go to the nordic countries, most of them are beautiful and very friendly.
Anyway have a good time.
