Why are many fancy design type sites hosted at Media Temple? Are they the best of the best?
I am exploring new hosting options, as I am currently hosting my site on the worst of the worst. But Media Temple would be a HUGE price jump. Anyone have any great web hosts to recommend?

(mt) has been great the entire two years I've hosted my crap (yes, it's crap) on their servers

chrystaltech.com is absolutely the best host i've ever used. support will bend over backwards for you and is SUPER timely. (I think they have a free chrsytal meth for employees program)
the extras (stats and such) are great, the plan pricing is the bomb, and you can get everything from asp to coldfusion and CFMX scripting.
plus ALL plans come with php. the plan i am on most is "I" which you get an access database all that and more for 17$ a month.
My favorite in 5 years of hosts.

That picture on http://www.crystaltech.com/ with the woman with no hips is kinda disturbing.

Peer pressure. You can do/find better.

MT = overpriced, poor customer service, but great marketing. I put a client on one of their servers and it was the worst experience with a host that I have had..

I'll have to disagree with you on their customer service, morphinelips.
They've been great when I've needed them, which hasn't been very often.
I don't mind paying a bit more for something I haven't had any trouble with.

there are tons of better hosts out there with a much better price customer service ratio

I pay for a box over there - and I love them.

If you really want to have a good hosting, forget about shared hosting. It's like this, you go and get a dedicated server through Rackspace (10 thumbs up!), set up PHP, mySQL and Apache for free and transfer your clients' sites to that server. This really makes sense if you are 100% freelancer and have constant projects and an established list of clients. Your clients will cover those additional costs for the dedicated server. If not then you really don't need anything better then those $7.95 a month hosting packages.

You get what you pay for.
I've had great experiences with MT...
You can do the application server there as well.
Joshua - is that what you mean by a "box"?

Mediatemple is good. I also was thinking today earlier that they have managed to create a nice brand for themselves among the design community, which is cool.
Right now though, I use dreamhost.com and I am happy with them.

Although there may have been problems in the past, MT is really providing more expected recently. I recommend them to clients often and have had no complaints from any client. Most clients think MT is super cheap compared to serious hosting solutions like Verio and the like.

I have had them for 2 years and have had about 4 instances with them that I have never had with any other host. Granted, they were fixed, but problems are problems.
I actually posted these problems earlier in the week in another mt thread, and the entire thread was deleted. I have had problems with uptime and their mail server, and others have had problems with their billing, and database & server backup/integrity.
I am currently looking at going with tera-byte.com. I know for a FACT that mt reads these, so if you're listening...bumping me up to a flashcom server would make this all go away...

Before you decide on a host go hear and do a search. http://www.webhostingtalk.com and see what other people are saying about them. You can find all you are looking for there.
I think MT has a pretty good rep on WHT too. So it would be worth a look.
GoodluckP.S. Do what boz said if your confortable with that sort of thing and have good customer support skills yourself.

I'm with http://www.phpwebhosting.com now, and pretty happy with them. I just took a look at http://www.tera-byte.com though, which a colleague has been recommending to me.... looks like an amazing deal... less than $10 bucks a month for 400 megs? Nice.

I've used http://www.tera-byte.com for several different projects. very nice. very stable. no problems at all for several years. their stats offering is the only somewhat weak aspect, but if you can get around that using a third-party stats solution, then tera-byte is golden.

Talk to "Enobrev" a.k.a Mark here at NT. Been using his service for a few months now and it kicks ass!

i've a site on phpwebhosting.com
and think the service is really feature packed for the price. SQL dbs and all.I only use them for personal stuff though, because the support doesn't even mail you back. Took them a week to get their virus def. updated to head off sobig.F. Not the kind of place i would trust with a good client.
