Every musician markets their stuff. There are no successful bands out there that don't.
Radio Head is a perfect example. Their "I don't give a f*ck about the world/people think" has gotten them much press. Their attitude towards touring has gotten them press.
The Rolling Stones advertise on TV for God's sake! They certainly don't need anyone to know their name, but it makes more money and it's good business.
Personally, I prefer seeing some chicks making out on stage than Mick Jagger's snarly face!
