Us Immigration arrested my friend!

Is this serious???
I don't know the whole story yet but what i know is that my friend was about to fly back to the Uk from Atlantic city airport last night and he got arrested for carrying a lighter/knife. I'm not quite sure what the object is yet but its some kind of lighter with a knife on it, anyway he's now been arrested locked up and is awaiting a court hearing of some sort. Is this a serious? I know America takes everything serious since 9/11 but will this effect him on being able to come back to America? and Is the a Misdemeanor?

Must have been a fairly serious weapon. Usually they just confiscate pocket knives etc.

Usually you dont arrest someone because he is carrying a light/knife, you just sequestrate it and thats it...

milan have you forgotten they hijacked a plane with a box cutter? thats a glorified shaving blade. if that packet knife is sharpend.. evenif its only an inch long.. its long enough to cut someones neck and do some damage...

Well his whole future was going to be in America with his girlfriend who lives there. I hope this hasnt changed things now :(

i feel bad for the guy but.. if i cant bring my knitting needles (yes i knit).. then he cant bring a knife. he coulda took it with him but put it in his checked suitcase. i still dont see why theyd arrest him. he must have had some outstanding tickets that turned into warrents.. ormaybe he said something really really really stupid when they said hed have to leave it behind. did security find it when they were doing the metal dector thing? or was he beign all shifty and trying to sneak it through. i he was doing anything out of the ordinary he had it coming to him. if not... it'll get clearned up tomorrow or friday when he goes to court.
hopefully he wont say anything stupid in court.

Did they ban baseball bats, golf clubs or any long pointy sticks? I think any of these could do more damage than a knife or a box cutter.

regarding that guy that got arrested for the t-shirt in the mall. Has anyone ever heard about how that ended up? or was it blown out of proportion by anti-war types?
