My new job...
- Most Ports on the network are locked down
- Can't setup IIS on my PC
- No access to any POP server to check my home email
- Not allowed to use mobile phones at work
- No using any messenger software
- IT dept. don't allow MS office because of its security holes (They use openoffice.org instead)It's all understandable because this company deals with lots of online transactions, bank accounts, etc. Is it over the top?
Anyone else got strict company policies where they work?

No working naked.
Anyone learned it the hard way?

I hope when you say "HARD" you don't mean it literally ;)
- Peter0
lol.
Actually, they require me to wear a suit where I am now.
Sure makes me wish I would be able to be naked at the office on some days.

no access to POP sounds harsh... do they let you make phone calls?

prohibited looking internet. but you see, im in! fuck em all i will make whatever i want...
- ribit0
I wouldnt work at any company that limits access to the internet... how are you meant to do research?
- jg_20
my boss is stupid. i can use internet just if i need to look for photos, or shit to steal... but i am not alowed to look for my own purposes...
his reason is simple but surrealistic:
he is afraid that i will find some better design company to work with while surfing the net.
i know, thats stupid. do i have internet at home? do i have eyes? do i have ears?.... you shoul know my boss!
- ribit0
did he say that, or are you guessing?
- jg_20
is for real. sad but true.

used to work at a place like that 4 years ago - and it's why I left

i am making my movement right now, but here in germany looks like you are lucky to have a job, doesnt matter how....
by the way, the boss is interested in firing me... this week, dont know when...! but may be i am not going to be fired...
shit, i am working in hell

sounds like a shitty workplace to me. having a somewhat strict environment is one thing, but jeez...
I don't know what you work with, but I could never do anything without IIS. Ask to get a separated connection or something. Pull some strings, be harsh on the hotshots, go insane!

The company i'm with is very strict too. In fact their proxy sever wont even allow Newstoday! good thing they never set it up for Opera. MAhahahaa.

Shit guys that sucks. My uniform here is old jeans, t-shirts and flip-flops. 50% of my time at work is spent doing "research" on the net. Lunch is as long as we want, breaks are anytime we feel like it. But the downside is that I have to deal with the most egotistic know-all boss in the entire history of mankind.

proxy and firewall are one thing, but no cell phones and other restrictions like that are ignorant.
i can see limiting 'normal' workers on their use of the web, but someone who works with the web should have freedom to surf.
but, as an IS/IT person, i can safely say i forbid IIS on any machine in the building as well...it's a horrible server, plain and simple. apache runs just fine on windows now...there is no reason to use IIS (unless, unfortunately you're an asp/.net developer).
yea, that place is a little to crazy even for my tastes...
it is cool they use open office, though.

That's pretty lame (many of your situations) if it's a design place and run with such a corporate mentality.
Above all work needs to be done, of course, but to just be reduced to a worker bee can't make being there all that great.I've heard several people in such jobs tell me that their work environment is extremely laid back, music playing, casual dress, etc. but when it comes down to it they get their work done, bottom line. have a good time, be relaxed, but know how to hit the floor running and not lose your mind.

in any case those strict companys have nothing to do with creativity!
if you are forced to sit, not music, not books, not internet, not walking, even not looking what is going around... are you going to be relaxed enough in order to reach a minimun creative level?
thats what my boss try to do. but he had never nothing to do with creativity. hes just the son of the one who made the bullshit where i am working in...
of course i agree with you mg33.
