Always wondered. Whatchu think it takes to be the best in this industry.
What skills are involved, and what life experience is required?

There is no best. It's all a matter of taste, opinion and envy. Unlike sports there are no scores to keep track.

How so? I'd expect creativity to win in the end... I mean, anyone can be technical, expecially with the range of geeks spewing out into the workforce.

I mean not the best, that was stupid. But competitive to the highest level, and attaining the confidence to put you on the level with so many great designers,

I disagree... Creativity is the strongest skill you can have.
"Skills" keep you on the production end of the industry. Creativity is what allows you to go beyond.

you can have all the technical skills you want but its worthless if you have no creativity or concept of design theories.
i agree there is no best in this industry. develop your own style and your best work will come from working in the style that youre most comfortable with.

I have to agree with Jox. Of course you need creativity, but in order to be the best you need to have kick ass allaround skills in order to be one of the best. Yes, there are a lot of people that use the tools, but I'm talking about advanced and creative usage of the same not something you only learn in college or whatever. We've seen so many good ideas applied poorly but on the other hand we've seen already used ideas but developed in a much much better way using better skills, and guess what the second one won awards and industry recognition.
The bottom line is, you need both but with a highlight on advanced skills.
