well, to add to the confusion there's this new technology i saw an ad for yesterday:
ADSL via the CABLE!
i swear to god.
I think you better randomly pick one, altho I'd go for ADSL.

The speed package, pricing or service is more important than whether it's adsl or cable...
Here in London you can get all sorts of packages offering up to 6mbps but cheaper if its fast nights and weekends, slower daytime etc... but depends where you live...
All here have terrible customer service, especially the monopoly BT.

Cable

I've had both. DSL has always been a pain in the ass.
Cable: Faster, more reliable, better support
ADSL: Slower, less reliable, shoddy support

if you are in the Uk get cable from telewest Broadband blueyonder.
Had no problem with it at all. And customer support is very good.

In the UK you don't always have a choice... no cable in our street.

heres what it comes down to. (i did the research recently)
Cable is capable of speeds higher than dsl, and it really will some of the time, but is inconsistant. in fact you wont get a cable company that will quote your down and up speed. Cable speeds also depend on how many people are subscribing in the area since it is after all a WAN. (if you have cable you must use a router with firewall. otherwise people in your neighborhood can view any shares you set up.) dsl is more consistant and reliable but you have to have a phone line (some just use cell phones).
i went with cable. i have even hit speeds of 1.8 down. sometimes i think about switching. but i dont want phone line.

NOTE TO COMCAST CABLE INTERNET CUSTOMERS:
comcast cable comes with spyware that reports web activity. besure to uninstall all comcast software plus the additional app it installs (cant remember the name) after you register the modem.

there's simply no adsl offered in this shithole.
from early september I'll be finally over to Antwerp and sit at my ADSL-powered internet.
can't wait. i'll see which of the 2 is best.
( i can always switch to cable there..)

dsl is probably better if you're into low-latency internet games. otherwise, it doesn't matter...nowadays the differences are too small to notice, and it really depends on the quality of the provider.

adsl and cable in the UK is shite unless you're paying business rates - you'll never get above 60k/sec on a 512k/sec line because of the 50:1 contention ratio.
