anyone have experience with officially signing over ownership of a logo design to the client?
Technically, according to what I've read, we [designers] own the artwork, but 'lease' the design to the clients for use... means we're offering a service, as opposed to selling a product... anyway, what do you know about this whole deal?
Muchas.

the Graphics Arts guild does a good job of making this understandable. Look to the Pricing and Ethical guidleins book.
they describe how designs other than work for hire, have rights to be assigned. A logo design can merit getting paid for the work and then purchasing the rights. and those rights can be full or limited, depending on the need of the client and the needs of the designer.

i think everyone that hires a designer or design co to produce their logo assumes its going to be thiers do as they wish once they have paid for it.

neither party should assume anything...

it's in the contract that they'll have ownership once the project is completed... I just offered something that I've never had to actually do [officially], so I want to get it right.
I'll check the GAG literature... thanks.
