the client should just buy a separate domain name for the gay crowd, and promote that site separately on gay night... it sounds like he wants separate sites really, so why not actually separate them if he's worried about mixing the two online audiences?

I would think of assocaited imagry (no, not the sexual images before you say it) things like stereotypes that come to mind when you think of streight men/women and streotypes you think of for gay men and women.
For things like this a "moodboard" or whatever the in word for them is these days, can really help.
How about the obvious, such as the male and female symbols ? You know the ones with the circle and an arrow through it etc, ?
I do agree that they should probably be on seperate sites, the owner is probably worried that visitors will think that the venue is strictly one or the other, so streight visitors might think it is an all gay club and vice versa.

just be upfront and honest. maybe have two sites with the club named different things, but with the address in the name so people wont be too confused. like Mambo at 25th and Flamingo at 25th. different signs, different looks (signs only, maybe colored lights, fontage), different entrances. Guess which ones would come in through the backdoor.

i'll do smething on a black background, with some nice photo work and also specify clearly the diff between friday and sat , i'll just put a gay flag under there somewhere.. nothing to big, people will get it fast if u play with the right pics.

Make two sets of icons that fit with each other. Icon A and Icon B fit together, but A fits with A and B with B also.
You could even make it tongue-in-cheek and fix it up so that A fits with B on one side and A on the other. The only people who will be offended are the people who don't go to clubs with gay nights anyway.

I would use the graphic symbols of male and female: two male symbols (day of the week ) male and female symbol (day of the week).
I think its not that obvious, at a first look, very obvious at a second look.
