i think about switching to linux on my 2nd pc.
old question, i guess, but which distribution can you recommend?

are you a newbie or experienced unix/linux user?

new.

stick with the bing, easy distros.
redhat, mandrake or suse.
if you are ballsy, i would say install freebsd (unix) or slackware (linux) - honestly, slackware's installation is pretty easy and straight forward, but it's not in a pretty gui like redhat or the other big names...so it can be a little confusing for someone new.
if you want to know what i think the best distros of linux are, i would say use either slackware, gentoo or debian...or use freebsd, openbsd or netbsd if you want unix.
what is the box going to be used for? server or workstation?

it's gonna be a workstation, but i think u answered my question alread y .. thanks man

If you use Red Hat 9, your life in general will just be easier. Especially if you want to use any third party stuff such as NVIDIA drivers or the Crossover plugin stuff from Codeweavers. Mandrake is nice also, but the way they name their packages is really, really annoying.
I've been extremely pleased with Red Hat 9.

Good luck with it tomkat. I've talked a lot of newbies through a lot of stuff, so feel free to email me if you get stuck with anything.
