anyone know of a way of getting a free UK Postcode database?
I need to do a search so that someone can find something near to them and the only way I can think of doing it is by postcode but it appears to be expensive.

Access to the database is bound to be expensive, but there is a postcode finder on https://www.royalmail.com
You have to register.
Or general addresses in streetmap.co.uk, maporama etc.

they have maps of every fucking city of our contaminated world.
you can find any street, any number, everything....

Thanks for the responses.
I looked into royalmail..money grabbing gits :)
I need to be able let the viewer say "where's my nearest thingy to my postcode/town/city" and I can't do it with these websites so i guess i'm stuck

Databases like that are pretty sort after aren't they? Why would they give them away for free?
I used to work on a product that was a public touchscreen kiosk with a "Where's my nearest... and how do I get there?" but sorry can't remember the name of the company that provided the database. The product was a partnership with them though, they certainly weren't giving it away for free!

yeah thats what i thought.
i wouldn't mind if it was for a client but this is a personal idea/projectguess i could go through te phone book or something and write down every postcode lol

i wouldn't bother.
a map with clickable areas sequentially zooming in is good alternative.
that way people can easily see which is geographically nearer to their house, where they work, their mum's house etc.
no database fees, no complications and easy for people to see where is easiest to get to, eg if they have no car and travel by train/bus etc
