Anyone have an effective process for naming files and folders for new projects. I'm looking for a file system that is intuitive and easy for others to find files.
Out of curiosity,do you normally save versions and versions like, version 1, 2, 3a, 3b or do you just dump the files that led you to your final design?
Any input on the subject would be very helpful.
Thanks

I don't save versions unless its a site that is completed and being revisited or its something I have to save progress on.
Typically no. Just find a system thats simple, but figure out what you want your naming to accomplish. Otherwise you have all this crap in the name you don't need.

3 digit customer code + item name + version + file extension
FRD_topnav_02.ai
works for us.

my explanation is taking a lot longer than i thought it would. i'll email it to you if you want. could even send a screen capture in case it sounds weird to you.

For our online magazine we use a lot of digital photography (like 20000 images so far), so we keep the 4 digit number from the camera thru all variations and uses, but append all sorts of names to the front of it...
... and folders get a 6digit tracking date first (year-month-day so it sorts numerically even if the creation date is lost)... but basically just lots of sub-directories... and searchable catalog files.... am I a geek yet?
