"anyone here been through a rough tornado storm?"
yup to both. growing up in the midwest out in the boonies we got a lot of that.
tornado- when i was about 12 my mother woke me up in the middle of one night by grabbing and janking me out of bed and rushing me to the basement. as we passed the front picture window it was humming so loud from the wind it hurt my ears. i noticed all the evergreen trees in the front yard were literally bent sideways at a 90 degree angle. she gave me a shove down the steps and said to go by my sister. she ran upstairs and came down a second or two later. soon after the violent storm passed with our house intact.
the next morning we surveyed the damage. most of the homes around us were damaged. the neighbor from atop the hill came over to my mother and said she witnessed the tornado approach our home and about 200 yards out "jump" over it.
later in life i was at my moms house after she had surgery and we were talking about luck and the lord. she said that night when she ran upstairs she threw some blessed palms into the oven cooker. i guess her grandmother did the same thing when she was a child. she remembers standing on their front stoop watching the tornado come for the house. my grandfather ran out and grabbed the kids in his arms and rushed them towards the back of the old home. grandma threw a handfull of palm into the stove and the tornado jumped their house too. her mom told her whenever in a bad storm burn the palm you get on palm sunday and the good lord won't harm you or your home.

i don't go to church, but the next time a lightning storm comes into my hood, i'm gonna burn some olive oil in my stove...
