I was thinking about registering a domain name, and thought about all those stories of people's hard earned DN being taken over.
Any advice on who to go with and what to do to make sure that what I pick now won't be taken over later on?

dont worry about it, there really isnt anything you can do.

How do they take it over?

Im not really sure, it has more to do with your host I think than where you reg. your name.
maybe go with mediatemple?seems like they give a shit.

like starwars, jedi masters come and use mind control to make you let your registration run out and then they buy up yer url and try and sell it back to you for 1 million dollars...

just don't use bad hosting/domain registration deals... simple!
Get the name registered with Dotster or GoDaddy or even Network Solutions... then go looking for a place to host it. If you do it right nobody can steal it.

do NOT, under any circumstances, use Network Solutions/Verisign.
...unless you are a masochist

GoDaddy or Registerfly (i use the latter)

holy crap GODADDY is cheap! Is this too good to be true?
or do they whack your *ss if you exceed the bandwidth?

Actually, GoDaddy's prices would be considered the norm for domains these days.
Also consider NameCheap ($8.88), RegisterFly ($9.99), or Dotster ($14.95). These are also some recommended registrars.
Just a note, these companies are registrars, not hosting providers. Although you may also get hosting from these companies, you may have to pay extra for it. It is best to get hosting somewhere else as you can get a better deal. It is also not wise to have your domain registered with your host because if a dispute with you and the host so happens, they may take your domain hostage.

even the big guys are getting into this market... Hostway does $6.95

Network Solutions has improved a lot from their '25 emails and faxes back and forth to change anything' days...now they have a simple control panel for managing your domains like Dotster... of course I'm STILL pissed off with them for all the hassles and wasted time they caused me in the past...

what's your opinion of register.com?
- unknown0
if you're worried about it, just dont bother to register one - I mean, theere's enough websites out there as it is, we can do without another one.
- ribit0
maybe we should start recycling existing names, before the interweb gets depleted...

some dumbass has had the name I want for the last 4 years and done nothing at all with it - I have her address and she's nearby so I may have to pay her a visit and bring her some concrete boots and a fountain pen, the choice is hers. mwuahahaha
