stay away from emachine laptops..
I would lean toward HP deal on that page
Hewlett-Packard Inc. offers its Pavilion brand ze5451 notebook for $1,099.99, after a $100 mail-in rebate. It runs an Intel Pentium 4 2.4-gigahertz microprocessor, has a CD-RW/DVD combination drive and 256 megabytes of memory that is completely adequate for most all tasks. It weighs 7.5 pounds,
it may be heavier.. but thats not much bigger than a college book..
The Dell on that page would be ok also.. but the HP has teh best bang for your buck for new laptop..
if you can find the toshiba for simalar.. that would also be good

I know this isn't the greatest laptop but what do you think? She wants to basically do mp3s and word processing and maybe watch movies.

I have to disagree with Burty here. E-Machines just came out with new laptop that kicks ass. Every major magazine praised it's features as well as incredible price. Ear Ramen noodles for a month, get additional $200 and buy this beauty. It's awesome.

Cheers.

I am using a sony vaio, I have been using it for a year and I do all my design work on it.
I think they are really nice and durable computers, and I noticed that they have made alot of the new ones more affordable.

there are some good dell laptops here for about $1200 CDN. if your friends sister just wants it for internet surfing blah blah blah it shouldn't be too hard to get a nice laptop for $1000/
