When you look at a map, the mountains are shaded so that you can see that the light is coming from the northwest, and the shadows fall toward the lower right corner. Photoshop has this angle by default. Is this an accepted standard or do people use different angles too (right to left)? Are there any mainstream examples of this?

From when I was doing product design illustration, top left to bottom right was the usual way we always set the light to.
Dont know if there is a convention.

It's because we're used to read images, like text, from left to right. So typicaly light comes first and then shadows.
I don't think it's a rule like a habit.
