redesign advice

Hello all,
Just wonering if you could give me some tips to make jmc.kent.edu a better place to be. I've been working on a redesign for last few months and could use some help in tidying it up a bit.

I exported as a gif, so the quality is shite, but any layout, nameplate advice...etc..would be more than welcome, thanks before hand.

So I noticed this thread falling for a bit, figured I'd pitch in some advice. It is a decent design, I've been to kent a couple times with friends and the quality of that I'm sure would impress them. Design wise I kinda thing its got some balance issues. the JMC Buzz and Head Line areas are, imho, annoyingly dominant. Everything else is pretty on point, maybe change the proportions/location of those to fix it.... also the logo seems sorta dwarfed, maybe enlarge and reinforce it elsewhere on the page? Oh, one other idea... the archive links on the tops of everybar..... they seem uber repetetive and well, they stand out a lot, maybe fade em more, or make them iconic? I dunno, just some late night suggestions from your neighborhood ... shit I'm not spider man.... designer.

Thanks a lot man, I really apreciate your advice. The reason headlines and "the buzz" play sych a large role are well..because i have very little choice in the matter, but maybe i can tone them down a bit and knock em' out of the limelight. the archives thing, i originally had it just iconic but the guy supervising this freaked out and just didn't get it so told me to archive everywhere..but yeah, i really do need to do some more clean up work on it along with polishing that name plate.
You said you;ve been to kent a few times, where are from then?

Gotcha, client demands can suck. I'm from Sandusky, I had a pretty long relationship with a girl going to Akron for a while, and she had some friends from kent and we used to go up there for some decent ice skating and stuff... that place has a nice setup for the skatin

Right on, I'm not much into skating, but I hear people do like it. Sandusky is awesome! i was up there visiting a friend not to long ago..and ya know..Cedar Point, much more exciting than ice skating in kent :)

yeah CP's nice, brings in lots of ladies... otherwise I'd prefer the zenness of ice skating to the three hour line waiting crowdedness, not to mention i've grown up with the park it loses the pizazz it has with out-o-towners.

the images you have for the students and alumni are pretty bad in comparison to the feature. I would swap their positions so the feature is at the top and the students etc. are below it. maybe even shrink / crop the others down so they aren't the first thing you see and taint your impression of the site.
The buzz and the headlines are also kind of garish, maybe a different background to tone them down a bit?
Very well done though. It looks like you get a lot of content onto one page without looking too cluttered. the archives links didn't bother me.

I know I'm replynig a bit a late here, just wanted to thank everyone for their inport. Can't read can't write Kent state..is sorta true...depends on how inebriated one is :)
I suggested moving the feature up a to replace those student shots, but my supervisor freaked, i guess he really likes those kids :) actually we're shooting better shots at the moment, sitewide actually, many of those are just place holders.
I think I'll try toning down the headlines and buz a bit. Thanks a lot guys.

good stuff. I'd lose the gradient bg in the top horz. section.
the photos (cept the blonde in spotlight and silohette/afgan) are not very good, and IMHO bring down everything with it. Get some well done shots - it'll improve things greatly. Shots that will fit in the oerall design, not just in the squares. Keep colors and their compliments (of photos) in mind. Otherwise, your in great shape.
