I love the thought of these people getting together so quickly, and "pretending" that they all know each other and such.
Do they feel totally normal, calm, standing there? Or is it a mix of tightened adams apple and feeling of total worthlessness combined?"

nairn makes a good point about "9 to 5" and, actually 4cy, i would say, consumerism itself relies on 'excessive' change (even if there really isn't any) so it kind of works in a reverse psychology sort of way, kind of like the truth.com and using 'punk rock' looking people to sell computers or garner interest in the stock market...if the intended effect is a blight on consumerism, it may backfire due to the ever pulsating, almost parasitic function of 'consumerism'.....it is alive!!!!!!!!ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
