os x boot problem

I'm setting up a G4 titanium for a friend that is new to macs and I wiped the drive with Norton, so it's empty (i've done this on 4 machines already) but now when I go to boot up from the OS 9 cd or the OS X cd neither works.
I get the ? folder then try to boot up from either disc, nothing. My Jaguar disc is an upgrade cd so it needs an earlier version of X to install.
Anyone have any suggestions on why it won't read the os 9 and X discs?

you're T-rubble with you friend huh?
newer versions of g4's dont run os9, and 99% sure you would need to get a full installer cd rather than just the upgrade for jag.

A titanium g4 should still work with 0s 9, so thats not the problem.
"?" usually means unblessed system folder. Try starting up from the nortons disk and check the hardware.

this happened to me a few months after I bought my tibook. I searched on Apple for a solution and my problem was that I needed to select a start-up disc...the only way to get it to do that is to boot up from the CD that came with OSX...then go into preferences and select a start-up disc and reboot.

I did try that, the problem is the cd is not being recognized.
This is the only time this has happened, i've been successful on a few other machines with this same cd.
Damn.

Can you put the system software on an external drive and boot from it via firewire?
Press Option-Command-Shift-Delete
during startup.

Do you have the original boot CD, it needs either that or a newer version of the OS that came with it. If that doest work, boot into it from another mac, using firewire (hold down the T key while restarting the laptop) and install from the other Computer...ill keep thinking of other ways
