Some of the engineers I know are the most creative people I met. And they do design, even though it's not always graphic design.

Engineering is probably the highest form of design.
Imagine being asked to fit 3,000 moving parts into a 2" x 2" sleek design that people can use.

you talking about graphical symbols, like arrows and stop signs etc. yes, they are important to everyday life, but dont really change the world, just improve how we use it.

Then everyone is a "designer" A florist "designed" the flower bouquet. A cook "designed" my plate. A hairdresser "designed" my haircut.. I dont see how those things can change the world. Maybe Im just not an optimist.

movies and television could/have changed the world

to name a few. yes, they changed our world in their own way.
we learned how to translate those symbols, it guides us via a uniform universal language of images.. great example! (but there are more)..

I think if you look at design ideologies rather than examples of design itself you will find more world changing things happening, take Conran and his ideals behind Habitat or Ikea and you start to integrate good design into your everyday life, what is important is that this has brought good design to people who might not have found it themselves.
I'm not saying habitat / ikea is particularly good, but the idea behind it is.

What 'graphic design' has had a huge impact on the world. Most people doent even recognise what graphic design is. They flick through a magazine and just think its a magazine with pretty pictures. Joe Soap doesnt give a rats ass about kerning of widows or what ever.
Not putting down our industry, its needed, but nothing really inovative has happened since the invention of ink. 'innovative' in the life changing sense

to conflict myself, the internet has changed the world. Look at how much money is spent yearly online. whereas 10 years ago there was none.
