What is your technique for erasing the background of an image? I know there is a program called knowckout but for years I have been just using the eraser tool and I am wondering if there is a better way. I am not looking for a faster way but just a better way that is more percise.

use masks in photosho, that way you never erase anything and its easier to fix mistakes later!

i just use the polygonal lasso tool, then as steady said, apply a mask.
The image/extract tools is pretty sweet too.

lasso + masks

masks (and lassos) are a good solution to keep the original iamge without erasing anything...

image/extract tool? which lasso do you use?
- sexypixel0
polygon lasso, the straight line one.
the extract tool is in the filters panel in ps7

I usually use the pen tool and make a selection with it for the mask.

working with path anchors to define selection curves is a nice method though, I used to do it for things like cars and objects with straight lines. (for catalogs and stuff like that)

it ain't PERcise but sometimes i just like to paint bucket the fuck out of everything

I make a mask based on the color channels and modify it there. It's a lot faster and accurate the the lasso.

depending on the object, path it out.

The old school precision of clipping paths. The only other time I use anything else is if the object I'm clipping has rough/fuzzy edges then i'll use masking/extraction....

scissors or exacto knife.

in the photoshop layers palette, click on the layer that says background. then select all and delete.
