Is there a way to take Studio Max files (.max or .3ds) and convert them to files Maya can open. I'm on Maya on a mac and have no access to Studio Max. HELP!!

export your MAX models as OBJ or DFX. I beileve they both will keep your UV maps.
Not so sure about exporting your lights and animation.
Also I never tested Maya on a Mac, but it should not be any different than the PC.

Like stated, some things will export, but not everything. I'm not too sure of the details, but you can try http://www.cgtalk.com and search through their forums. They are a pretty good resource for this sort of info.
Also, there are a dozen programs out there whose sole purpose is to export from one program to another. In other words, you are going to have to expect some loss.

The issue I have is that I have the max models, but no access to the app itself. I have the 3ds files but no max so I either need a Maya plug-in to import the max files or a third party app.

I'd guess you can't open .max files outside of max, but a third party app might work.
I'd suggest sending it to someone on one of these forums and having them convert it.
I could, if you wanted, but I've never done that before so no promises.
CGTalk is a great resource. Try that first, if not, I'll be checking my email in the morning if you need it converted.
