I like the background image it's kind of different.
The left nav looks huge. It's not proportion to the rest of the elements in the site.
ALso you might want to rethink the project section. why did you split them into 3 sections? At first glance I thought they were non related work.
Otherwise it looks good. What are the controls? It looks interesting.

the background i have seen before on amateur homepage sites. never seen it on a "pro" site before

yes, there is a new WebTypography Standard since today:
use Verdana 9 px with a 6 px leading (15 px line height).
no arial / times / georgia / courier

leading is an old therm used by typographers using analogue fonts. it is the space between two lines of text.
it is line height minus corps height.

you can superimpose on a photo you like, blur it a bit and make that as a bg.
Personally I think you should make the bg a solid color as you have a lot going on in your site already. if you want something more interesting, try using several bg colors options for users to change.
Or something organic to balance out that ridge structured design.
