nothing beats hiring a good mason and just building a brick fireplace to your specs.
please don't buy a gas fireplace that can be turned on with a lightswitch...lame.

i have seen these movable fireplaces that don't need a chimney..
it burns some kind of gel that doesn't emit smoke..
very nice!
(don't know of any links tho).

Nothing beats a wood fireplace, but man, the effort involved is crazy. I grew up in New England, and I can recall chopping wood in a foot of snow. Not fun.
The flick a switch kind are a decent compromise. Safer, more for looks than anything (they don't get that hot), but they work. I've had a bunch in apartments. Usually fairly cheap looking, though.
Here's a company my client has me modeling from (the are ass ugly, though, but I guess some people like that 'old looking' crap).

i love my fireplace - it's a monsterous brick and stone piece that sits in the middle of our living room and burns real wood.

as with most things...the original is still the best. if you want to stay warm get a real wood burning stove, if you want to get girls get a real wood burning fireplace.

UK based - they make the flame effect wood burning stove. Look nice and they are clean BUT there is something about a real fire which these don't quite capture. They are UK based. We have one since we don't have a chimney and these work with a flu.
