this site makes pretty extensive use of a lot of features the current version of Flash offers, so it seems.
I participated on a debate on a similar SOTD/SOTW pick which was equally ugly.. that was on another board however.
Finally a Macromedia rep. jumped in the discussion and told us they generally don't judge aesthetics (obviously), but rather the technical aproach.
i think to encourage non-graphic designers to buy the product and create something that works but still is butt-ugly.

4cy - This is the worst reason in the world to lower the aesthetic standards. For macromedia to have its product associated with crap is a terrible business move.
I wonder what features this site uses? As far as I can tell there's no back-end fancy stuff with that kind of preload.
I think they just don't get good entries some days and that's just the dude's excuse to save face. I mean - the are not going to be 365 great new sites to feature every year. The award has lost its prestige I think.

they said it themselves! i have seen truly horrible sites, and i mean by aestethics the utter depths of evil darkness to win a MM SOTD!
but then they used all or most of the features, and i don't mean no backend stuff, just MM components etc..
it seems the SOTD-jury just doesn't have eye for aestehtics...
and believe me, small-business owner Joe Average thinks that site rocks and wants his little restaurant like that too, so he gives his nephew a couple of hundred bucks to buy Flash!
(or that's their (MM) thoughts i reckon..)
