between breaking apart a bitmap and using the trace bitmap tool in Flash MX?

tracing a bitmap converts it to vectors, breaking it apart just lets you edit the image, like erasing portions of it, etc.

the vector's fill is the bitmap when you break apart a bitmap. ie, try doing the eyedropper on a broke-apart bitmap, get it's "color" onto your palette, then draw something (polygon tool, paint tool, etc). the bitmap is still intact and is passed along to the swf.
tracing a bitmap turns that bitmap to a bunch of vectors. if the bitmap isn't used anywhere else in the movie, the bitmap is not passed along to the swf.
